Dawna Voelkl, DVM

Veterinarian

Dawna Voelkl was born and raised in Emsworth, Pennsylvania and earned her undergraduate degree from Bryn Mawr College in 1991. After completing her post-baccalaureate pre-health courses at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Voelkl received her veterinary degree (DVM) from Cornell University in 2003. She then completed the first year of a residency in comparative theriogenology (reproduction) at the University of Minnesota and the final two years at the New Bolton Center of the University of Pennsylvania. At the conclusion of her residency training, Dr. Voelkl achieved specialty board certification from the American College of Theriogenologists in 2006.

From Penn, Dr. Voelkl joined the faculty of the College of Veterinary Medicine in Missouri and served as Assistant and then Associate Teaching Professor of Theriogenology. She has provided clinical service in reproductive medicine to dogs, cats, horses, sheep, goats, cattle, alpacas, and llamas, while also instructing students in the practice of veterinary medicine. Her interests in canine reproduction include breeding management, andrology (reproductive medicine of the male), neonatology, and genetics/genetic counseling. Dr. Voelkl has served as director of a comprehensive lecture course in theriogenology. Dr. Voelkl has spoken on a variety of topics in reproductive medicine in Missouri and nationally, presenting continuing education for veterinarians as well as seminars for audiences including breed specialty groups and kennel clubs.

Dr. Voelkl and her husband also operate a working sheep farm, breeding and raising Dorper and crossbred sheep with the assistance of their Border Collies Biddle and Sir Plus as well as their Australian shepherd mix Jack. In her spare time, Dr. Voelkl enjoys training and competing in canine agility trial, biking, and hiking. She is a devoted Steelers fan and looks forward to coming home!
